Living in the desert has its perks. Those perks show up between the months of November and May, but the winters are especially mild and beautiful. JOANN challenged me to sew something for Christmas for my daughters, a handmade holiday outfit. I hadn’t picked out dresses for them yet and saw this gorgeous fabric when I was shopping and knew just what dress I wanted to make!
Violette Field Threads has a gorgeous pattern called Zoey and since my younger girl is Zoey, I just knew it was fate! I picked out both this beautiful plum colored cotton fabric and this gorgeous mustard rayon to work with and both were a dream to sew with. I chose not to go with traditional colors or holiday fabric so that these dresses can be worn for awhile!
It isn’t cold here in the winter so mid-sleeves were perfect and I just love how the dresses give a Bohemian feel.
I also picked up coordinating bias tape to make the pattern easier to sew and some embroidery thread to make some tassels to finish it off!
BUT my favorite part was showing them these sweet dolls that I made to go with their dresses! How perfect are these dolls that you can personalize in any way you want? I loved being able to use the fabric that I sewed their dresses with to sew small dresses for their dolls. Paint finished off their faces, hair and boots and I added a felt flower wreath for their heads and some little details with embroidery thread and doodads I had.
It’s so fun to take something blank and make it into something that I knew each of my girls would love.
They have already had some good times playing with their dolls. It was super easy to whip up some extra clothes so they could swap and share.
I remember playing dolls with my sisters when I was little and it is so fun watching them too!
So whether you do a complete handmade holiday or just a few items here and there, this fun doll and dress were a perfect way to start to get into the Christmas spirit in our house (even if it wasn’t all red and green!) JOANN was the perfect place to start and get all the things I needed to make them. I hope your holiday is wonderful and has at least a little bit of ‘handmade holiday’ in it!
